Or Check the PPP log file. Banksia Technology was a vendor of modems which was quite popular in the early days of the babksia. AFAIk all external serial modems are hardware modems.

I really have no idea where to go, banksiz googling has really helped me much, was wondering if anyone has any idea, or can point me in the right direction on how about solving this? Assuming ubuntu has the standard ppp packages installed, you could also try using the cli tools to configure the modem, I believe the command is pppconfig.
